Meeting people in a room.

A Gathering is a small event — a listening night, a repair café, a swim hour — that you get into with your verified Skein profile. Scan your code at the door, and for the next fortnight everyone who was there can turn up in your daily set, however far away they live.

Why they exist

Two reasons, and the second one is the honest one. Meeting someone in a room is easier than meeting them in a thread — you already have the room in common, and nobody has to compose an opening line. And ticket revenue means the app does not need your attention to make money. An app funded by how long you stare at it will always, eventually, be built to keep you staring.

What one looks like

Skein has not run its first Gathering yet. These are examples of the shape, not events you can buy a ticket to — no real venue is named until one has actually agreed.

Where

Safety at a Gathering

Everyone in the room has been through the same verification as everyone in the app. Tickets are tied to a profile, so a banned account cannot buy one, and the "who else was there" list afterwards is mutual opt-in — nobody appears in it because they showed up.

Skein is not the venue and does not run its door. The venue's own rules apply, and the community rules apply to how people behave with each other either way.

Suggest a venue

If you run a bar, a shop, a pool, a garage or a room and you want to host one, write to support@skein.me with where you are, what you have in mind, and roughly how many people fit. Every submission is read and approved by a person before it is published — there is no automatic listing.

Members can suggest a Gathering from inside the app too, on the Gatherings tab. Same queue, same person reading it.
