Boilerplate
Fifty words
Skein is a dating app that runs out. Five people a day, chosen for proximity and what you are both looking for, then it closes until tomorrow. There are no bare likes, nothing expires, and nothing can be bought that puts anyone in front of more people. Built by Altros Studios; open in Tampa Bay and Tuscaloosa.
A hundred and fifty words
Skein is a dating app built on the opposite bet from the rest of the category: that a short queue read properly beats an infinite one skimmed. Five people arrive each morning, chosen for proximity and for what both people say they are looking for. To start a conversation you have to reply to something specific — a prompt answer or a photo — so the first message is about a person rather than a face. Threads never expire and the app never nudges you to respond. Everyone is verified by a liveness capture that is deleted the moment it has been checked. Location leaves the device already offset and quantised, so no coordinate ever reaches the company or another user. The subscription, Skein+, deliberately sells no visibility of any kind. Revenue comes instead from Gatherings — small real events you get into with a verified profile — which is how an app can afford not to want your attention. Skein is made by Altros Studios and is open in Tampa Bay and Tuscaloosa.

Using the name
“Skein” — one word, initial capital, never in all caps and never “SKEIN”. The subscription is “Skein+” with no space. A group of five is “a skein”, lowercase. Events are “Gatherings”, capitalised.
